The water

The upper Housatonic in Connecticut runs from the Massachusetts line through Salisbury, Canaan, Sharon, Cornwall, Kent, and Sherman to New Milford. That stretch has two trout management areas.

The card reads the USGS gauge at Falls Village, which drains 634 square miles above it. CT DEEP also lists a phone line for Housatonic flows at Falls Village: 1-888-417-4837. A gauge reads one spot, so take the number as the river’s mood, not the depth at your boots.

Normal is USGS’s own call: the middle half of the daily flows on record for this date, across every year the gauge has run. You know your water better than a chart does.

Flows here can change, so check the live number, or call DEEP’s flow line, before you wade.

Rules on this water

  • Trout management area. From the Routes 112 and 7 bridge (Salisbury and Canaan) to the Routes 4 and 7 bridge (Cornwall and Sharon): trout catch and release only, fly fishing only in the 3 miles above the Route 4 bridge, as posted. A trout and salmon stamp is needed.
  • Bull’s Bridge area. From the Bull’s Bridge impoundment dam in Kent to the Route 7 bridge at Gaylordsville in New Milford: trout and bass are catch and release only.
  • Bass, all year. Largemouth and smallmouth are catch and release only from the Massachusetts line down to the Bleachery Dam in New Milford.
  • Summer closures. From June 15 to September 15, water within 100 feet of posted tributary mouths is closed to all fishing.

Seasons, sizes, and limits are CT DEEP’s call, and they change. Check DEEP’s river and stream regulations, its species regulations, and its trout management areas before you go.
