The water

New York City dams the West Branch of the Delaware at Cannonsville Reservoir. Water the city doesn’t take for its supply is released from Cannonsville Dam into the lower West Branch, and DEP and DEC also release water to help keep its fishery going. From there the river runs south and becomes part of the Delaware River, the border between New York and Pennsylvania.

The card reads the USGS gauge at Hale Eddy, on the lower West Branch between Deposit and Hancock. It drains 595 square miles above it. A gauge reads one spot, so take the number as the river’s mood, not the depth at your boots.

Normal is USGS’s own call: the middle half of the daily flows on record for this date, across every year the gauge has run. You know your water better than a chart does.

On the lower West Branch, most people fish for brown trout, with rainbow trout behind them. The Delaware below Hancock has its own page, Upper Delaware, and it carries this gauge as a second line.

This stretch runs below the Cannonsville dam, so the flow can change. Check the live number before you wade.

Rules on this water

  • Trout, April 1 to October 15. On the water DEC calls Wild-Premier, 1 trout a day, any size. October 16 to March 31, catch and release with artificial lures only.
  • Catch and release, all year. The 2 miles below the Route 17 bridge at Deposit, artificial lures only.
  • Where it’s border water. Where the West Branch forms the New York and Pennsylvania line, DEC’s border water rules apply, and DEC says a New York license is good on the Pennsylvania side along the boundary.

Seasons, sizes, and limits are DEC’s call, and they change. Check DEC’s inland trout stream rules and border water rules before you go.
