An Origin Story
Fishing isn’t just something I stumbled into, it was woven into my life from the start. As a kid, fishing was the number one thing I looked forward to. My grandfather taught me the ropes in local ponds, showing me the basics and let me figure out the rest.
As the years went on, my dad took it further bringing me to the Salmon River in upstate New York. The fish were bigger, the fights were tougher, and every trip had the potential for something unbelievable.
One of my earliest catches was straight out of a fever dream. I don’t know if it was the first, but it’s the first I remember – a goldfish. Yep, a full-blown, bright orange goldfish from a local pond in Westchester. Someone must’ve dumped it there after a carnival or when it outgrew their tank. I still hear the laughing as we pulled it out, damn thing looked ridiculous.
This is how you get hooked.
It wasn’t until I got older, when fishing became more than just a weekend activity, that I realized it was never really about the fish. It was about the break in routine. It was about casting out a line and seeing what comes your way.
It becomes a meditative practice, where skill meets patience, and you just let things flow. The moment you start forcing it, you’re setting yourself up for a break-off, both in fishing and in life.

Why Fishing Feels Like a Side Quest
Gaming has main quests with clear objectives, missions, known loot. But side quests? That’s where the real magic happens. Fishing for gamers is the ultimate side quest because it starts off unassuming and leads to the most unpredictable stories.
- You don’t know what the hell you’re doing at first.
- You struggle, you fumble with load outs, you overthink things.
- Then, you level up.
You stop stressing about how to fish and start focusing on the experience itself.
- Fishing is like grinding for XP: repetitive zen. The more you do it, the faster you level up your skills.
- Waiting for a bite is the ultimate RNG loot drop. You never know what’s spawning at the end of the line.
- Sometimes, you pull monster fish from the smallest spots, or tiny ones from the biggest waters.
And just like gaming, when you’re fully immersed in it, time dilation hits. You fall into that flow state where the world outside disappears and your mind locks into the present now.
The rod moves in your hands just like a well-timed deflection, casts become fluid combos – you don’t think about it, you just do it.
The Mental Reset: Fishing as a Gamer’s Escape
No game has ever truly encompassed what it feels like to be in water. Feeling how tides move with the moon or currents flowing down stream. It’s soothing as hell. More than that, it pulls your mind away from subconscious or nagging thoughts.
Gaming drowns out the noise and helps you relax, but fishing and spending time in nature builds a balance within your highest vibrations.
Ever had a stressful week, then hit the water and felt instantly lighter? Yeah, same. A bad day fishing beats a good day doing just about anything else. There’s something about being on the water, rod in hand, waiting for a bite while the sun rises or sets that is guaranteed to trigger a hardware reset for your brain. Peak relaxation.
And for gamers who think fishing “looks boring”… I’d tell them this. From the outside, grinding for loot looks boring. Until you roll an epic drop. That’s fishing.
The anticipation. Electric thrills when the line snaps tight like yeah, that’s a boss fight. That’s the rare loot. The moment that makes it all worth it.

Building the Perfect Budget Fishing Loadout
A lot of people think fishing requires expensive gear. I don’t want you to be one of those people. Remember some lures catch fish, other lures catch fishermen. The truth? You can get started with less than $100: cheap Ugly Stik rod ($40 bucks, even cheaper if you find a deal). Decent Shimano reel. 8 lb test monoline. A handful of hooks & weights.
- Bait?: Fish eat like they’ve got the munchies. Think hot dogs, chicken, hell even bread will work. Honorable mention to worms. Its not just a trope.
- Must-have tool?: Long-nose pliers. Nothing will ruin the chill side quest vibes faster than not being able to unhook your catch.
- Pro-tip?: Carry small nail clippers. They’ll save your ass when you need to snip line on the fly.
And if you’re thinking about playing music vs. listening to nature? I used to insist on music when I was younger. My dad always said “listen to the birds!”, and I didn’t buy it. Now? I get it. The soundtrack of nature hits a reset button when you actually let yourself listen. It’s the best background noise for a refreshing day.
You can download a copy of the loadout so you’ve got it for later.

Legendary Fishing Moments: The Good, the Bad & the Hilarious
Every fisherman has that one story; the big catch, the epic fail, or the moment that turned into meme material. Here are some of mine you may have experienced yourself.
- Most Beautiful Catch?: 31-inch, 20-pound steelhead. Looked like a damn water unicorn with a stunning pink stripe. Unquestionable epic loot drop.
- Worst Fail?: Falling in the river while salmon fishing in Pulaski. Nothing humbles you faster than a line of hardcore anglers watching you wobble and splash crossing the river at 5 AM.
- Funniest Moment?: Up at a private New York campground, my buddy lights a joint, winds up for a legendary cast, misfires backward, and somehow instantly catches the biggest bluegill of the trip off the back of the dock. The Five Point Bluegill Backward Casting Technique is now legendary. Attempt at your own risk.
Why Every Gamer Should Try Fishing at Least Once
Fishing isn’t about sitting in silence. Ok, sometimes it is. That’s when it’s most tranquil. But for gamers, what you’re here for is the ultimate side quest. That’s when all the grinding pays off. If you love exploring for loot, you’ll love fishing IRL.
- Best way to start?: Find someone who already fishes. Getting power-leveled is the best way to find rares faster.
- Fishing + Gaming?: Imagine you’re filling up a Pokédex-style app that logs your catches like Pokémon. Take time to really look at the fish you catch and appreciate how amazing nature is. We need this app too someone partner with me to make one!
At the end of the day, fishing for gamers is the chillest side quest you’ll ever accept. It’s an AFK reset button. A real-world RPG moment. And your new favorite way to clear your mind while stacking XP IRL.
So if you haven’t given it a shot yet, gear up.
And if you have? Fish On!
