Some games hand you a sword and say, “Go save the world.” These aren’t those games.
Immersive colony sim survival games kick you in the teeth, steal your shoes, and dare you to crawl back up the mountain; while bleeding. And yet… we love them.
Games like Kenshi, RimWorld, and Project Zomboid aren’t here to make you feel powerful. At least, not at first. They’re here to make you earn every inch of your empire. There’s no golden path. No hand-holding strategy to ease the pain. Just struggle, betrayal, and the survivor’s moment of glory.
Those earned moments? They hit harder than a Shek warrior’s Falling Sun criting on your neck.

The Most Brutal Defeat In Colony Sim Survival History
RimWorld was my gateway drug into colony wide suffering. I went in cocky, thinking we could easily outsmart the AI. The base felt thriving. A cozy wooden fortress with farms. Strategically stoic defenses. Colonists living out their backstories. It was glorious.
Then Randy Random in his divine wisdom proclaimed: “f*** your plans.”
Raiders dropped from the sky to both the north and south at once. Our gear was actually trash. The defenses? Laughable. Closely packed colony walls? Flammable. Pawns dropped like flies. Then, like a twisted joke, The Man in Black appeared – oh our savior!
And let me tell you, perhaps in the most immersive fashion, he started out swingin… then he got folded like a lawn chair.
Game over. The pain? It was delicious. You start craving what only immersive sim survival colony games can satisfy. A different experience you cant satiate anywhere else.
RimWorld doesn’t just destroy you. It teases you with hope. And when it all crumbles? That collapse becomes a core memory.

Why We Keep Coming Back
Colony sim games with survival elements force you to build something from nothing. There’s no linear path. Every choice. Failures and loss. Decisive success. It’s all yours.
In Kenshi, RimWorld, or Project Zomboid, you’re not just playing a game. You’re surviving a reactive immersive world. Writing a novel one disaster at a time. The drama, unscripted. The head-cannon, elite.
Your characters get names. Background chatter turns to lore. You mourn when they die. You celebrate when they build a stove that doesn’t catch fire. Their loot becomes your loot.
It’s about the grind. Your climb. Their fall. The chaos.

That One Time We Thought We Had It All Under Control
Let’s talk Kenshi. Our Shek-only squad run led by legends Melika and Ronin. Their mission? To topple the Holy Nation at any cost.
We started at the bottom. Literally. Shek slaves who could only remember a life in Rebirth. The paladins view it as a place of rejuvenation. We saw it as a dirty Holy Nation mining camp. We earned toughness the hard way: beatings, starvation, theft, and stealth drills under watchful eyes.
You can say our escape was premeditated.
We waited for nightfall. Picked the northern mountain exit. Checked the stars. Made our break.
Then RNG hit back. An Inquisitor lead Holy Nation patrol swung by the camp exit during our escape – of course they did a midnight entrance through our exit.
What happened next should be song by bards for an era.
Half the squad got chopped. Few made it out uncrippled. Melika and Ronin lead the survivors; the crew was thin but hardened. We regrouped in the sands. Found a hub to heal. Now we train for revenge and freedom for our captured kin.
Kenshi doesn’t hand you victories. It forges them.

Satisfying Play Styles
Don’t know where to start? Here are three savory flavors of Immersive colony sim survival strategy:
- Kenshi Solo Arc: Start as a punching bag for hungry bandits and end up a renown badass. It’s slow, painful, but once you start soloing squads that previously enslaved you? Peak catharsis. Plus, the soundtrack? Easily one of the most incredible in gaming. That eerie, ambient post-apocalyptic tone sings to your soul.
- RimWorld Group Chaos Theater: With friends around, RimWorld turns into a sitcom. A twisted, bloody, often-drug-fueled-cannibalistic sitcom. And that’s why we love it. If you want a good time, have everyone create their own colonist. And then:
- “Yo, your guy lost a leg.”
- “Cool, give him a bionic one.”
- “Also he started a cult. That chill?”
- “Expect nothing less. Green Light!”
- Project Zomboid’s Slow Descent: There is no winning in Zomboid. The whole game is how you died. You board up a gas station. Build a garden. Start to feel safe. Then winter comes. Food runs low. You raid a hardware store and get mobbed in the street. Your best friend turns. Or was that just in your mind? Your hideout gets overrun. It’s the most earth like apocalypse sim out there. No power fantasies. The creeping horror of collapse and the satisfaction of outlasting it one more night.
If We Had to Survive One of These Games for Real…
Let’s not kid ourselves:
- Kenshi? We’re enslaved, eaten trying to pet a beakthing, or dominated by a security spider in the first 12 months.
- RimWorld? Either immediately harvested for organs or sacrificed by a tree-worshiping cult.
- Project Zomboid? Okay, we might last a day or two. We’ve seen 28 Days Later. You know how to boil water, tape up a wound, and loot a gas station without getting bit… right? Shit.
Regardless of what you path you choose, these games are fun.

Final Thoughts: Colony sim survival games make suffering feels so damn good
The allure of these games aren’t the linear achievements. It’s about the scale of your impact. The global unpredictability. The peace through power. The epic storytelling.
You don’t play these games to win. You play them to experience something. Every disaster tells a story. Every scrap of success feels noteworthy. These are games that respect your time by withholding victory from you until you earn it.
